I was on TikTok Live, and we were having such a deep conversation about why so many women over forty fear starting over. Society, family, friends, and culture all play a role in why we hesitate to make big changes. Here are some of the reasons that came up:
Societal Expectations
Society tells us that by our 40s, we should have everything figured out—career, family, relationships. There’s this unspoken rule that our worth diminishes after a certain age, making many of us feel like we’ve “missed the boat” on chasing new dreams or starting fresh.
Media Portrayals of Age
The media glorifies youth, especially for women. It’s constantly reinforcing the idea that your best days are behind you once you’re past a certain age. Women in their 40s and beyond often feel invisible, like society no longer sees or values them.
Internalized Timelines
We’ve been conditioned to believe that life needs to follow a specific timeline: career success by 30, family by 35, and stability by 40. When we don’t hit those milestones, we feel like we’ve failed, or that it’s too late to start something new.
Comfort Zones
After years in the same career, relationship, or routine, staying where you are feels safe—even if it’s not fulfilling. The comfort zone becomes a trap, and the fear of the unknown often outweighs the excitement of change.
Good stuff, right?
Well, during the live, a woman named Vicki shared that she wanted to go back to college but felt like she couldn’t because she was busy helping her daughter go to college.
I asked her: Why can’t you do both? Even if it’s just one class or going part-time, why not take a step toward your own dreams too?
So many of us put ourselves last, supporting everyone else until we lose sight of our own dreams. I didn’t want that for Vicki, so I encouraged her to make herself a priority.
Fast forward to last night’s TikTok Live, where we were diving into Untamed by Glennon Doyle for our book club, and Vicki came back with news! She registered for both a computer class and a sewing class!
And get this—she already made a tote bag in her sewing class!
WHAT?! I was blown away.
I’m so proud of her. This is why I do what I do—helping women reclaim their freedom, rediscover who they are, and live life on their terms.
If I hadn’t shown up, Vicki might never have realized she could start over, simply by making the choice.
